Local Port Services

Course also known as: LPS

Designed for small and medium sized ports throughout the world that experience low or moderate shipping volumes and that do not require a full Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) System.

There are many waterways, including small and medium sized ports, where the volume of traffic or degree of risk does not justify the implementation of a VTS. IALA has developed Guideline 1142 to address ‘Local Port Services’.

Local Port Services training is designed for those ports and other waterways in which some or all staff responsible for ship/shore communications and other operations do not require full Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) certification, but still require a basic training program in order to carry out delegated safety and commercial mandates of the Harbour Master within the context of a Local Port Service.

This training has been designed to specifically address the requirements for the provision of Local Port Services where a VTS is not required.
