Tanker: Advanced Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations (Online)

Course also known as: Gas Tanker

Provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to undertake safe, pollution-free liquefied gas handling and transportation, and also supervise and train personnel involved in operations procedures. AMSA-approved.

Course Entry Prerequisite

Please note the following prerequisite is for entry onto the course and evidence must be provided upon enrolment:

  • STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate and STCW Gas Tanker Familiarisation Certificate; or
  • STCW Certificate of Competency for International Waters endorsed with Tanker Familiarisation (Liquefied Gas)

Course Structure

Online Theory Content and Assessments

The online course is delivered through the University of Tasmania's learning management system, MyLO.  The course requires a reasonable internet connection and a webcam to complete the online theory assessments.

The online course consists of the following ten sections:

  • Section 1 – Ship Characteristics and Cargo Containment
  • Section 2 – Chemistry of Liquefied Gases
  • Section 3 – Properties of Liquefied Gases
  • Section 4 – Hazards and Monitoring
  • Section 5 – The IGC Code and LGC Construction 
  • Section 6 – Pipelines and Tank Fittings
  • Section 7 – Cargo Handling Plant
  • Section 8 – Cargo Operations
  • Section 9 - Tank Filling Limits and Cargo Calculations
  • Section 10 - Firefighting and Other Emergencies

Two theory assessments are provided upon the completion of the ten sections; the assessments require a 100% pass mark with unlimited attempts provided.

Simulation Exercises

After completing the online theory content, you will be required to complete simulation exercises utilising K-Sim Connect online portal. The simulation exercises require a reasonable internet connection speed and will need to be completed on a desktop/laptop. 

You will be advised of the booking dates for your simulation exercises and the allocated time within which you need to complete them. We will provide you with an exercise manual and instructional video to help assist in the completion of the simulation exercises.

Certification

The following certificate will be issued by AMC to participants who successfully complete the course:

  • Advanced Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations (AMSA approved), meeting the requirements of STCW Reg V/1-2 and Code Section A-V/1-2, paragraph 2, Table A-V/1-2-1

Equipment Required

The course involves the viewing of multiple videos, which require a reasonable internet connection speed. Certain components will need to be completed on a desktop/laptop computer, and we suggest using Google Chrome as your browser. To complete the final assessment, you will need access to a web camera.

Computer setup: Check your computer and/or browser are set up to enable MyLO to work properly by running a browser check.
