Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities


Course also known as: PSSR

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities is designed to prepare participants for life on a ship. It provides insight into the various elements of a ship, such as working conditions, hazards, procedures, and safe work practices.

This course is one of the components required to obtain an AMSA issued Certificate of Safety Training (STCW Reg VI/1), the mandatory minimum qualification required to serve on board vessels in international waters.


Online Theory Component

The online theory component is delivered through the University of Tasmania's learning management system, MyLO. The course requires a reasonable internet connection and a webcam to complete the assessment.

The online theory components consist of the following theory module:

  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

Please note – the online theory learning and assessment will take approximately 12 hours to complete and will need to be successfully completed at least 2 working days prior to attending AMC for the practical components.

On-Campus Practical Component

The on-campus practical component consists of the following module:

  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (0.5 days)


The following AMSA approved certificate will be issued by AMC to participants who successfully complete* the course:

  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-4)

*100% attendance, full participation in practical exercises and successful completion of all online theory assessments is required.

Australian residents who successfully complete this course will also receive the following Statement of Attainment:

  • MARF041 Observe personal safety and social responsibility

MARF041 is a nationally recognised unit of competency under the Australian Maritime College (RTO ID 60131).

Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as meeting the requirements laid down in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
