Course also known as: Sea Safety, STCW 95, Basic Safety Training

The Certificate of Safety Training (STCW Reg VI/1) is the mandatory minimum requirement in order to serve on board a vessels in international waters.

To gain an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) issued Certificate of Safety Training the following short courses must be completed:

  • Elementary First Aid
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Security Awareness Training

Please note – Those wishing to work on Australian-registered vessels must complete an AMSA approved Certificate of Safety Training course; many STCW courses offered in Australia are not AMSA approved and therefore will not qualify you to work in Australia.

BLENDED DELIVERY COURSE STRUCTURE

Online Theory Components

The online theory components are delivered through the University of Tasmania's learning management system, MyLO.  The course requires a reasonable internet connection and a webcam to complete the assessments.

The online theory components consist of the following four theory modules:

  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Security Awareness Training 

Please note – the online theory learning and assessments will take approximately 30 hours to complete and will need to be successfully completed at least 2 working days prior to attending AMC for the practical components.


On-Campus Practical Components

The on-campus practical components consist of the following four modules:

  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (2 days)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (0.5 day)
  • Personal Survival Techniques (0.5 day)
  • Elementary First Aid (1 day)


CERTIFICATION

The following certificates will be issued by AMC to participants who successfully complete* the course:

Basic Safety Training (AMSA approved), meeting the requirements of:

  • Elementary First Aid (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-3)
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-2)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-4)
  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-1)
  • Security Awareness Training (STCW Reg VI/6 and Code Section A-VI/6 paragraph 4, Table A-VI/6-1)

*100% attendance, full participation in practical exercises and successful completion of all online theory assessments is required.


Australian residents who successfully complete this course will also receive the following Statement of Attainments: 

  • MARF035 Contribute to fire prevention and fire fighting
  • MARF037 Follow vessel security procedures
  • MARF041 Observe personal safety and social responsibility
  • MARF046 Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment

MARF035, MARF037, MARF041, and MARF046 are nationally recognised units of competency under the Australian Maritime College (RTO ID 60131).


APPROVED BY

Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as meeting the requirements laid down in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).


AMSA INFORMATION

The Certificate of Safety Training (STCW Reg VI/1) is issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

To obtain this Certificate, you will need to lodge a formal application to AMSA, at participating Australia Post Outlets, by completing the AMSA Seafarer Form 419, attaching the required supporting documents including AMC certificates for the following short courses:

  • Elementary First Aid
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Security Awareness Training
