New course: Gas Fuelled Ships – Operation and Safety

Gas Fuelled Ships – Basic Familiarisation and Advanced Safety is the first course in Australia to be accredited by AMSA for meeting the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code).

The IGF Code came into force on 1 January 2017 and requires seafarers working on vessels using gases or other low-flashpoint fuels to meet mandatory training requirements – all of which are covered in our new course.

Gas fuel can pose safety challenges to ships, crew and the environment, and the objective of the course – as well as the IGF Code – is to minimise these risks.

There are two parts to the course: Basic Familiarisation and Advanced Safety. Basic Familiarisation covers safe operation, preventing hazards, health and safety, firefighting, environmental protection and emergency response.

Once completed, participants can progress to Advanced Safety, which is designed for deck and engineering officers and crew who directly handle and operate gas fuel systems, including bunkering of LNG.

The course is available on demand and is also scheduled for the following dates in 2018:

Course tutor is Sankaramoorthy (Moorthy) Narayanasamy, a lecturer at the Australian Maritime College who has over 24 years’ seafaring experience including as a chief engineer on LNG carriers.
