Autonomous Maritime Systems Fundamentals (Part A)

Course also known as: AMS Fundamentals

Provides an introduction to Autonomous Underwater Vehicle and Unmanned Surface Vehicles technology, key terminology, operating concepts and system capabilities/limitations.

Designed for personnel who need to start building their knowledge of Autonomous Maritime Systems, ie  both AUVs and USVs. It is ideally suited to individuals who need an understanding of Autonomous Maritime Systems, but at this stage of their careers do not need to directly operate them. 

The course is delivered through either remote or face to face theory sessions followed by question and answer sessions to provide candidates with optimal learning outcomes.

  • Data formats, conventions and management
  • Launch and Recovery Systems
  • Vehicle localisation, navigation and communication in the surface and underwater environments
  • Introduction to autonomous mission risks and mitigations
  • Introduction to managing lost vehicle situations
  • Introduction to hydrodynamics and hydrostatics
  • Sensing above and below the water with optics, acoustics and RF
  • Introduction to Post Mission Analysis and Vehicle Performance Analysis
  • Vehicle thrust, power and control systems
  • Autonomous systems mission scenarios and near-future capabilities
  • AUV case studies: discussions of lessons-learned

Prerequisite

No prerequisite training is required.

Outcome

Participants who successfully complete this course will be eligible to receive an Australian Maritime College Certificate in Autonomous Maritime Systems (AMS) Fundamentals.
