ISM and the Lead Auditor covers the ISM Code and marine safety management systems combined with the principles and practices of modern auditing.

Through a logical progression of highly participative presentations, group discussions, case studies plus individual and syndicate exercises, the delegate will gain:

  • Knowledge of the history, background, objectives and implications of the ISM Code
  • A basic understanding of management system concept and principles
  • An understanding of the ISM Code as a risk based management system model
  • Knowledge of the content and objectives of the ISM Code as well as a practical approach to the interpretation and application of the ISM Code requirements
  • An understanding of the basic principles and practices in risk management as the basis of a safety management system
  • Knowledge of the processes involved in the design, development, implementation and continual improvement of an effective safety management system in the context of shipping operations
  • Demonstration of compliance with the requirements of the ISM Code by means of records and other objective evidence.


You will gain knowledge of the principles and practice of the conduct and reporting of audits, including:

  • Planning, preparation and reporting of the audit
  • The relationship between the auditor and the interviewee
  • Conduct of the audit and auditing technique
  • Identification, assessment and grading of non-conformities and observations with respect to the requirements of the ISM Code as well as the process of resolving them
  • The differences between the audit of a new system and that of a mature, established system

Who should participate?

This course is equally suitable for those who have or may have in the future, duties involving matters of safety and pollution prevention and who want to develop a good grasp of how management systems can achieve these goals.

This course is comprehensive and fully self-contained. No knowledge of management systems, the ISM Code or auditing is assumed or necessary.


Delegates will receive a Lloyd’s Register certificate upon successful completion of the course.
