Tasmania is an island south of the Australian mainland and is a state of Australia. It was first discovered by Europeans in 1642 when Dutch explorer Abel Tasman raised the flag of the Netherlands. However it was not until 1803 that Tasmania was settled by the British. Tasmania is Australia's second oldest settlement.

Tasmania now has a population of approximately 500,000 people who live across all regions of the island.
