AMC Search Ltd is the commercial arm of the Australian Maritime College (AMC). A significant part of AMC commercial activities involves the Maritime Simulations Centre (MSC). AMC Search Ltd is therefore assisting AMC to obtain expressions of interest for the position of Senior Instructor for the MSC.
The MSC is used for training seafarers across a broad range of levels from Master IV/V through to Deck Watchkeeper and Master Unlimited; high level consultancy projects, usually involving manoeuvring of large ships in confined waters; and research projects including projects involving bridge teamwork, communications and human factors, and accident prevention and investigations, port design and development.
AMC is currently investing in a major upgrading of its MSC, and is also adding Dynamic Positioning to its simulation capabilities.
The Senior Instructor will be part of the AMC team providing training using simulators in coastal and ocean navigation; use of electronic aids to navigation including ECDIS and AIS; passage planning; ship to ship and ship to shore communications; bridge procedures; search and rescue operations; and high speed navigation.
Consultancy and research work is conducted for a wide range of corporate and government departmental entities, often as part of critical evaluation of port expansion and design; handling of new and large ships in restricted waters; use of tugs; effect of squat, bank effect and ship to ship interaction. Instructors should have substantial ship handling experience, and be able to work alongside practicing marine pilots and harbour masters.
Reporting to the Manager - Maritime Simulation Centre, The Senior Instructor will ideally have:

- Teaching/training experience and qualifications - desirable
- Experience in using marine simulators, or a good level of computer literacy skills
- An ability to communicate with a broad cross section of maritime industry personnel, including senior pilots and managers
- Marine Pilotage experience would be advantageous
- While not essential, a Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificate would also be an advantage
- Experience in the gas tanker and/or offshore industry - desirable.
