Course Prerequisites

A current Australian issued Certificate of Competency (CoC). Pre STCW95 CoC – an ARPA certificate is also required

Course Duration

10 days (including a 3 hour session conducted after hours)

Course Aim

This course is designed for those seafarers who hold an AMSA issued Master, Chief Mate or Deck Watchkeeper, STCW78 as amended Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Recognition and have insufficient qualifying sea service (at least 12 months on the appropriate vessels in total within the preceding five (5) years, or at least 3 months such service in total within the preceding 6 months) to revalidate their Certificate of Competency. This course complies with the requirements of Marine Orders Part 3, is STCW78 as amended compliant and is approved by AMSA and New Zealand Maritime Safety Authority.

Content

Part A

  • Updates and refreshers in Cargo Operations, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISPS, ISM stability, safety, and practical refreshers in:  Fire fighting, Survival and Medical

Part B

  • Updates and refreshers in: Electronic Navigation Systems, Electronic charts, ECDIS, BRM, Collision Regulations, Passage Planning, and Command Navigation, including 4 days of simulator exercises.

Exemptions

We will make every endeavour to ensure you are provided with the correct information, however, applications for exemption are assessed by AMSA and you are urged to ensure you are undertaking the relevant training in order to revalidate your Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Recognition by checking with AMSA prior to attending any courses.

The following is a brief overview of exemptions available; for specific details and current information, participants are advised to refer to the AMSA website http://www.amsa.gov.au/Marine_Qualifications/Certificate_Revalidation/

1. Port pilots serving in Australian ports will have that service accepted as meeting the qualifying sea service requirement to revalidate their AMSA Deck Certificate of Competency RESTRICTED. A Port Pilot may have such a restriction removed at any time – for full details, please refer to http://www.amsa.gov.au/Marine_Qualifications/Certificate_Revalidation/

2. Port pilots serving in Australian ports and Coastal pilots employed in the compulsory pilotage areas of the Torres Strait and Great Barrier Reef will have that service accepted as meeting the competencies of “Part B” of an AMSA approved revalidation course.

3. Service of at least two and a half years in the preceding 5 years as a Harbour Tug Master/Mate employed in Australian ports will have that service accepted as meeting the qualifying sea service requirement to revalidate their AMSA Deck Certificate of Competency RESTRICTED to use within the port limits where the tug operates.

4. Master or Deck Officers serving on a FPSO for a period of at least 12 months in total within the preceding 5 years are exempt from Part A.

5. Service on disconnectable FPSOs or MODUs on voyages, and only when operation in the self propelled mode, is accepted in full for revalidation, when the total sea service onboard during self propelled voyages meets the qualifying sea service revalidation requirements.

Candidates who hold a pre-STCW Convention Certificate of Competency, i.e. other than STCW78 or STCW78 as amended, are advised to contact AMSA before undertaking any course, as there may be a requirement for some additional training and/or short courses to be completed.
