Reducing illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing is a high priority for fisheries managers. This professional development course covers the major considerations for achieving optimal compliance rates with fisheries management controls. Emphasis is placed on the importance of incorporating compliance planning into the overall fisheries management process.
Content
The program reviews the theoretical basis of non- compliance in fisheries providing a framework for considering methods to create voluntary compliance and effective deterrents to reduce IUU fishing. The use of risk assessment techniques to identify major threats of non-compliance in fisheries is promoted throughout. Risk assessment is presented as a tool to prioritise the use of compliance assets and optimise the use of available resources. Methods for developing and assessing an effective fisheries compliance plan are also key components of this course.
