DP Operator Training – Advanced Course
Course Prerequisites
Course Entry Requirements
Candidates participating in the Nautical Institute DP Operator Training Scheme must have completed Phase 1 and 2 prior to attending the Advanced Course. Phase 1 is achieved by successful completion of the Basic DP Operators Course at any Nautical Institute accredited centre. Phase 2 requires a minimum of 30 days DP watchkeeping familiarisation and completion of practical logbook tasks (as far as is possible).
If you do not have the minimum 30 days seatime (refer NI DPO Certification Guidelines below) you may not qualify for a NI approved AMC certificate and your log book will not be endorsed.
NI DPO Certification Guidelines
Attention is drawn to the NI DPO Certification guidelines (Jan 2010) that states “Those prospective DPO’s seeking certification are required to enter the dates on which they joined and left the DP vessel. This has always been understood to mean that the vessel carries out significant DP operations, and thus use of the DP system, during that time.”
Recommendation
While 30 days watchkeeping familiarisation is the minimum requirement, candidates considering attending an AMC Advanced DP Operators Course are encouraged to accrue more than the minimum amount of seatime. This recommendation will not delay a candidates progress through the scheme, as any DP seatime gained during Phase 2 in excess of 30 days can be counted towards Phase 4 (6 months supervised watchkeeping experience) in accordance with NI guidelines. This does however allow candidates to apply their enhanced practical knowledge during the course, and achieve the best possible learning outcomes.
