Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) – STCW Basic Safety Training

An AMSA issued Certificate of Safety Training (CoST) is the mandatory minimum requirement in order to serve on board vessels in international waters. It is not possible to gain employment in the industry without this Certificate.

Course Registration

Acknowledgement of registration will be provided by return email. Confirmation of registration is provided upon payment of the course fees, and subject to AMCS Registration Terms.

9 days plus completion of the online Security Awareness Training

AMCS Registration Terms

To secure your enrolment, payment of 50% of the course fee is required.  Cancellations up to 15 working days prior to the scheduled date will be accepted without penalty.  Cancellations less than 15 working days will be subject to 100% cancellation fee.

AMCS reserves the right to cancel the course if insufficient registrations have been received by seven days from commencement of course.  Any fees paid for cancelled courses will be refunded in full.

When making flight bookings please ensure you book on a fully refundable basis.

Course Aim

AMC’s CoST course includes Security Awareness Training (SAT). SAT is required under recent International amendments, and will be mandatory from 1 January 2014. All AMC SAT certificates issued in 2013 will be recognised by AMSA as meeting the International requirements.

Certification

The following certificates will be issued by AMC to participants who successfully complete the course:

Basic Safety Training (AMSA approved), meeting the requirements of:

  • Elementary First Aid (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-V1/1, Table A-VI/1-3)
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-V1/1, Table A-VI/1-2)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-V1/1, Table A-VI/1-4)
  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Reg VI/1 and Code Section A-V1/1, Table A-VI/1-1)
  • Security Awareness Training (STCW Reg VI/6 and Code Section A-VI/6, Table A-VI/6-1)

100% attendance, full participation and completion of all practical exercises is required in order to successfully complete the course and qualify for the issue of the course Certificate.

AMSA Information

The Certificate of Safety Training is issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). To obtain this Certificate, you need to apply to AMSA presenting copies of AMSA approved Certificates for:

  • Basic Safety Training; or
  1. Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
  2. Personal Survival Techniques
  3. Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
  4. Elementary First Aid
  5. Security Awareness Training

Location Information

The course is conducted at the Australian Maritime College, Newnham Campus in Launceston Tasmania

Participants arriving at Launceston Airport should make their way to the Australian Maritime College, Newnham Drive, Newnham.  Taxi fare from the airport is approximately $55.00.

Parking:  Complimentary car parking is provided on campus in areas designated to AMCS participants and clients.
